Dynamic Positioning Auditing and FMEA Trials
Dynamic Positioning Audits and DP Vessel FMEAs (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) can be undertaken to ensure the compliance of the vessel to the appropriate DP standards or others as required by the charterer or the vessel owner. The vessel owner should provide documentation identifying the reliability of the DP system.
The purpose of the audit is to satisfy the Company that the vessel is safe, suitable, and 'fit for purpose' in accordance with Company DP Vessel Operations Procedure.
The DP Audit consists of a detailed survey of the vessel's position-keeping systems related equipment and personnel. Followed by a series of function tests and trials designed to confirm the capabilities of both the system and the operators.
As a General Guide, the Audit Should Include the Following:
- Verification of the DP Operator's experience and qualifications in accordance with the criteria laid down by IMCA Competence, Assurance and Assessment Scheme.
- Verification that the vessel meets the requirements as specified by IMCA Guidelines for the Design and Operation of Dynamically Positioned Vessels. Confirm DP checklists and procedures are adequate.
- Witness the vessel set-up trials.
Ensuring Vessel Safety
Dynamic positioning audits are carried out on all types of drilling rigs and offshore vessels, including diving support, heavy lift, pipe laying, trenching, and ROV support vessels, to ensure "fitness for purpose" for each particular work scope.
DP audits and sea trials are designed to identify any potential "single point failures" which, if occurring when the vessel is operating on DP, could cause the vessel to move from its intended position and threaten the safety of the operation.
Furthermore, DP audits and trials help to prove the position keeping capability of the system.
If any failure modes are found, recommendations are made either to modify the system, if practical, or to adapt the operational procedures relevant to the work scope.
Annual Trials
We undertake annual DP trials to IMO & Class approvals, using standard IMCA guidelines. Reports are generated within 3 working days, and our surveyor will discuss any findings with ship staff and management prior to final documentation being issued. We do not believe in merely finding faults and writing reports - we work with you to identify any areas of concern and assist you in correcting them to ensure a safer, more efficient vessel, crew, and equipment.
Annual DP trials and audits can be undertaken either on an 'ad-hoc' per vessel basis or on a fleet basis, where we will maintain a vessel database, advising you well in advance of audit anniversary dates, so that you can be confident that planning of forthcoming surveys is made that little bit less stressful.
